IndieUnderrated: Andy Pankakes-Syrup

Fans of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Rex Orange County will love this slinky new release from Andy Pankakes. The music video adds to the song an absurdist, light hearted visual aesthetic that evokes the tongue in cheek music videos of Tyler, The Creator and Boy Pablo. The video features Pankakes and his band performing in a backyard, obviously taking influence from Mac Demarco’s music video for Another One. The video shows that Pankakes doesn’t take himself too seriously, which adds to the fun, relaxing feel of the track.

Production wise, Syrup is based around soft, electronic sounding keyboards that play jazzy chord progressions. Expanding beyond the Supertramp esque Wurlitzer keyboard, a half time drum beat punctuates Pankake’s deep vocals, with glockenspiels in the background. The production is mellow but with a flare of fun and retro sensibilities that make it perfect to relax to.
