Indie Underrated – Tiny Cities, Livingmore, Rooskin, Big Sleep

Fans of artists like Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman will love this new single by Tiny Cities! “Body Cast” is a folksy, downtempo gem. Fans of artists like Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman will love this new single by Tiny Cities! “Body Cast” is a folksy, downtempo gem. It’s primarily characterized by acoustic guitars, tipsy percussion, and intimate vocals. The highlight of the track for us, though, is that resonant, electric guitar melody. (At least, that’s what we’ll call it. It kinda, maybe, sounds like an amplified banjo [which is awesome]. Whatever it is, we dig it and we think you will too!)

Away Away Away,” the newest single by Livingmore, is an escapist, power pop anthem! Any time a song is created (and created well) within this genre we can’t help but hear the influence of bands like Cheap Trick and Pretenders; it has that straightforward rock instrumental quality that prioritizes catchy melodies and progressions over grandiose displays of skill. We hear too, though, some modernity in the vocal layering (a little reminiscent of alt pop bands like boygenius).

We’re gonna be humming along to this one for a while! (The video is great too! Check it out below.)

There’s a certain type of indie pop/rock that emerged in the late 2000s/early 2010s that, to us, has always felt really close to nature. We’re talking about bands like Beach House, Lord Huron, Real Estate… something about the music made by these bands usually feels perfect for a beach, or a hike, or a bonfire. We think “Everything’s A TV Show,” the newest single by Rooskin, fits comfortably within this tradition! This chill, atmospheric track is structurally flawless and instrumentally dreamy. We suggest you add it to a playlist featuring those bands mentioned above!

Check out this groovy new indie rock single by Big Sleep! “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo” is as catchy as the title implies. Around a swingy rhythm section, the band employs bright guitar chords, atmospheric tones, and memorable vocal lines. We’ve covered Big Sleep before on this blog; their recent string of singles has been quite outstanding and we can only hope that it might be a sign of more to come! We recommend this song in particular for fans of bands like The Jam, Cage the Elephant, or anything in between.
