Baby it was awful / And it was beautiful. This final utterance of “Zombie Song” by Emily How perfectly articulates the nuances that pervade the entire track. This alt rock slow-jam is anchored by a dissonant guitar riff but elevated by dreamy vocal harmonies. It employs both atmospheric guitar bends and screaming power chords. It’s lovely, but harsh, and therefore human. We think it exists well in an atmosphere with artists like Big Thief and Julien Baker.
Fans of artists like Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire will love this song by some Human. “Devolvers” is primarily characterized by chorus-affected guitars, playful percussion, and rhythmic vocal melodies. The progression keeps the song catchy while electronic tones work to disorient the listener. And the resulting indie rock track is one that feels both reliable and surprising as a whole.
We love what we hear in Kurt Creger’s song “Older.” To us, it sort of sounds like a cross between Sam Fender and Noah Kahan; Fender apparent in the sublime vocal melodies and Kahan in the wide, Americana-inspired instrumental arrangement. The mood of the song is one of searching and deep consideration. We can’t help but imagine vast landscapes of wonder while listening.
Lili Mare enchants with this single “Hurry Up (She Needs Ya).” The groove is incredibly steady and the electric guitar playing is restrained and tasteful. These instruments create a perfect backdrop for the smooth and warm vocals to cascade over. The verses are moody in a Holly Humberstone sort of way, and the chorus is as catchy as any Taylor Swift one. We think the song would fit perfectly on a playlist with artists such as those.
