Indie Underrated – L’ESPIRAL, Athena Lim, Peter Donovan

“Mr. Babylon” by L’ESPIRAL is the intuitive, new, alt-pop single we can’t stop listening to. Music is often praised for its tightness. Mr. Babylon” by L’ESPIRAL is the intuitive, new, alt-pop single we can’t stop listening to. Music is often praised for its tightness. Less often is a song praised for its ability to embrace looseness and imperfection. We praise “Mr. Babylon” for the latter. It is a song made up of jubilant instrumental tracks that travel in unsuspecting directions around the space of the speakers to foster a truly organic listening experience. This comparison might be a stretch because of production quality differences, but we hear a little George Michael in this song; George Michael put through a gritty, modern filter. That’s a style of music we didn’t know we wanted to hear until “Mr. Babylon” came across our headphones.

‘Til the Sunrise” is a celebratory new indie-folk single from artist Athena Lim. Expect it to go left and it will turn right on you, all while maintaining a steady and compelling groove. The song begins with a spare acoustic/vocal arrangement that’s somewhat reminiscent of Lord Huron. It then quickly flourishes into a fuller production, complete with gorgeous strings and electronic tones. Overall, it’s artistic, moving, and catchy. Above all, it’s sure enough going to make you want to “dance ‘til the sunrise.”

Musical storyteller Peter Donovan impresses with the release of his newest album, Community Theater. It kicks off with a title track that sets the tone for a rich and thought-provoking sonic experience. “Community Theater” is an Americana-rock meditation. The song maintains its beauty when interpreted literally, but we think it reaches into its deepest emotional wells when accepted as an extended metaphor. The vivid lyrical composition is paired with a sentimental rock arrangement that shares similarities with music from bands like Counting Crows and Train. Believe us, you don’t want to miss Community Theater. Be sure to “get your tickets” now!
