Indie Underrated – Molly Jane, The Gravedigger’s Son, ElanorGrace

Naarm-based alt-R&B artist Molly Jane creates from a place of awareness and attention. Her newest single, “Cough,” captures a single, fleeting moment and stretches it into something both beautiful and meaningful. Lyrically, the song is rather spare. Musically, the opposite. “Cough” is a guitar maximalist’s dream with its collection of licks, arpeggios, and fuzzy chords. Each instrumental part moves curiously around the space of the track and this gives the song an authenticity that feels as organic as the moment it preserves. Listening makes us feel as if we’re right there with the artist.

The Gravedigger’s Son packs a punch with their newest single “Your’e Sooooo Cool” (sic). This alt-rock banger employs the emotional angst of emo-rock with synth tones and pop hooks to create an absolutely addictive track. The guitars are crunchy, the drums are loud, and the intensity only ceases for a brief breakdown that sets up a smashing bridge and final chorus. We hear it as sort of a mix between blink-182 and The Killers.

Rising alt-pop star ElanorGrace stuns with her newest single “Bloodhound.” The song tells the story of a contentious relationship through an extended metaphor and does so over a sprawling guitar-pop backdrop. The way ElanorGrace has synthesized her Americana roots into alternative expression reminds us a little of Kings of Leon. Vocally and structurally, however, we think this song resembles Shania Twain through a modern filter (especially in the choruses.) ElanorGrace is one truly inspired artist with an impressive ear for catchy hooks, and “Bloodhound” is the newest evidence of her talents.
