Jethro Pickett, the self proclaimed “prince of freak folk”, has released his latest single entitled “Jolene (Not A Cover)”. Although written as an homage to Dolly Parton, the song bears no resemblance to its predecessor, but instead combines the lush-country themes of Glenn Campbell with hints of 60s psychedelia. Dig the angelic choir backups as the song builds. It’s like driving a vespa through the countryside. Fun fact, it was recorded in a 120 year old boat shed on a riverbed in Tasmania, where the artist currently resides.

Israeli singer/songwriter and producer Zohara has released her new aptly titled single “I Didn’t Have a Brat Summer” and it’s a wonderful combination of jazz, R&B and sounds inspired by the Middle East. Her voice is dramatic and emotive, with phrasing that showcases a heavy jazz influence. Sounding almost like a show tune written for the dance floor. The gloriously ironic video encompasses the song’s theme, while also highlighting the fact that Zohara would make a perfect contender for a future Amy Winehouse biopic.

Dig the retro inspired sounds and catchy hooks generated by Moon Sand Land with their new single “Give Me Panic”. The band says the song “highlights the feelings of dread that arise when navigating the chaotic, transient spaces of life”, as expressed through the insanely danceable groove and expansive, yet simple guitars. Reminiscent of artists like Pavement and Sonic Youth, its a mix of old and new influences, converging into a unique brand of post-punk for the new decade. Available on the EP “Table Tennis” (released 2/20/25).
