“Despite the band having roots in Nashville, this song embodies those gritty vibes often found within the rock and roll scene of NYC…”
The Nashville based duo that call themselves The Criticals have released their new single “Mother of Style”, an energetic rock and roll dance party that will surely appease fans of The Strokes. Despite the band having roots in Nashville, this song embodies those gritty vibes often found within the rock and roll scene of NYC. The vocal sound maintains a perfect balance between clean and overdriven, “dirty” for lack of a better term, and is delivered with an authoritative laziness supported by biting guitars and a tight rhythm section. There’s no shortage of energy here, and the addictive melodies will surely make this a listen on repeat.
Always a pleasure to feature an artist from my hometown of Philadelphia, the Snacktime crew tap Devon Gilfillian to deliver the soulful vibes of their new single “Together”. Blending elements of neo-soul, Motown, and contemporary R&B, the final product is a unique marriage of quality musicianship and dynamic songwriting. For a contemporary release, it sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago, embracing analog-based recording techniques and processes for a “modern-vintage” feel. One of the many stand-out features is quite obviously the horn-section, offering a fresh take on Stax and Motown. Their economically placed melodies and accents mixed with a powerhouse rhythm section make this infectious song one that will get you movin’ and groovin’, even on the days you may not want to.
Brother Andrew’s new single “Stoned and Paranoid” offers chill, lo-fi stylings reminiscent of artists like Mac DeMarco and King Krule, with tinges of 60’s psychedelia. A descending melodic line never goes out of style, and the chorus-soaked guitars act more like accents rather than the driving force of the song. The flowing, atmospheric, almost ocean-like qualities seem only fitting for the Asbury Park, NJ based musician who “began performing at a young age in the school choir. These years laid the foundation for a tendency for writing church-like melodies and his balladeering singing style”. Check out his social media pages for a mix of music and comedy skits.
