Still On My Mind” from UK artist Jack Dean, is a powerhouse of a song and indication that this is an artist you will most likely hear more about. A delicate organ and piano intro illicit a folky vibe and the song cleverly builds into an anthemic gang-chorus primed for sing a longs. It’s instantly recognizable that Dean has vocal chops, ranging from a delicate whisper to explosive soulful wail with tinges of gospel and early R&B. The song also channels more contemporary influences like Ed Sheeran, and in many respects sounds like it could have been written for him. Although it would be questionable whether or not his vocal prowess would be as suitable for this type of track.

Crocodile Tears”, the new single from (almost fittingly) Australian singer/songwriter Ellis King showcases her ability to construct a gem of a power/synth pop song. The chord progression during the verses dangerously flirts with the melodies from the 90’s classic “Teenage Dirtbag”, yet King’s delivery and voice instantly turns it into something uniquely her own. Catchy hooks, familiar pop melodies coupled with the layering of modulated guitar tones and retro synthesizers give this a familiar yet foreign vibe directly upon first listen.

Changing it up a bit with “Therapy” the new release from Le Chateau (formerly Chateau) whose sound has been described as “Dark Indie Pop” and “Electronic Indie Pop”. Can’t say that I would disagree. Droning synths, catchy melodies, and crunchy grooves coupled with chant-like vocals create an ominous vibe, yet retaining an uplifting quality. The guitars add a sinister edge that adds some of the rock flavor. Musically one can find traces of Nine Inch Nails or electro-Brit pop artists like Massive Attack and Moby, with tinges of heavy metal influence. The single is part of the San Diego based trio’s fourth EP release following ‘Picture This’ from 2019.

London based (by way of Argentina) singer-songwriter Matu, delivers an impressive performance that is both vulnerable and haunting in his new single “My Favourite Song”. Driven mostly by a gentle acoustic guitar, varied between finger style and strumming, Matu’s confessional vocals soar over top. Utilizing a healthy slew of traditional folk inspiration, this song builds and drops in all the right places. With sparse piano accents and a rhythm section consisting of mostly hand percussion, it creates a homey, intimate vibe that’s both familiar in a bar or on a stage. It’s also impressive to hear a singer of different origin have such command over singing in another language, though the rooted accent keeps a humbling level of authenticity.
