Nico Davis’ new single is a true contender for song of the summer. The most recent single from the Glassboro based singer-songwriter Nico Davis comes hot off the tail of his debut EP, head in the clouds. Serving as a followup to the track “float” in particular, Nico’s sultry baritone vocals, which draw to mind the music of Joji, compliment the lyrics nicely, with a panache of confidence and romanticism that bring a real sense of soul to the music. One particularly nice touch are the backing vocals that flutter throughout the beat and add to the song’s romantic feel.

Production wise, this song builds off Nico’s previous work, with an emphasis on atmosphere. The beat is built around woozy, heavily compressed Rhodes pianos and washed out synthesizers that built to a trancelike musical soundscape. Nico’s beats are his calling card as an artist, with knocking drums and deep sub bass that show the influence of iconic producers like J Dilla on his work. In an era of R&B that seeks to pull from genres like indie and electronica, with artists such as SZA, James Blake and The Internet leading the charge, Nico Davis is a name to look out for. Nico is a star in the making with a sound that is all his own.
