The legacy of Rock lives on in the Brighton project Self Torque. Their new EP No Rest for the Depressed masterfully scans the fringes of classic punk, 80s alternative, post punk, and grunge.
The blend immediately erupts out of the convincing opening number Daydream. It bends more visceral on the appropriately titled Anxiety in the UK. The song effectively blends the realms of Nirvana, Sex Pistols, and QOTSA. The song is a clear affirmation that the band is literally pissed.
Despite their scorn they can’t help but keep it tight, the musicianship throughout is overall impressive. The aura adapts with an emo indie brilliance on the undeniable Sea, Stars, and Moon. A crossover triumph, the vibe ascends somewhere between underground heroes Delta Spirit, 80s alternative heroes the Replacements, and first wave Jimmy Eat World. We freakin love it.
Clocking in just over 10 minutes, Self Torque doesn’t waste a moment. Every song spins you round and never puts you down in a way that’s exhilarating. Dig into all of this breakthrough release
