Something big is happening in Canada and it involves Ukrainian songwriter Tired Cossack. Emerging out of the underground and into the foreground of the indie scene, Tired Cossack offers catchy compositions that lean slightly abstract in a manner thats intriguing to a broad scope of indie music fans. The lyrical quips are clever and the vocal stylings borderless, as Cossack uses his vessel as more of an instrument adapting to the melodic and emotional needs of the song.
His new album I Know, I Guess is a strong dynamic statement. There are comparable placemarks to chart this vibe. You can hear elements known to Modest Mouse on the opening Sardines, or a trace of Smashing Pumpkins in the subsequent New Binge. Both singles are blessed with an indie sensibility akin to recent breakout kid Petey. It’s a testament to Tired Coassack’s blend of grunge, shoegaze, post punk, and fifth wave emo. Songs like Dingo Starr accentuate the sentiment, with a Nirvana meets Post Punk stylistic flex.
Coming in at 12 tracks its a thick prolific release that demands your full attention, scaling various emotional moods like on the appropriately titled Downer and Casio. Beautiful produced and melodically smart, I Know, I Guess is worthy of several complete run throughs. With sonic treats drizzled throughout, you’ll find new surprises with every listen.
