We dig the stylistic blend S.J. Armstrong brings to his new single Silver Days. We hear elements of pop, southern rock, and psychedelia baked into this vibe. He bridges the gap between Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, and more recently Midlake or Strand of Oaks. There’s a fair indie sensibility. It’s heard in the songs dreamy immersive layered design. That includes how he layers his vocals and blends it into the mix with a calculated verb design. He succeeds at leaving the lyrics legible while giving his voice reverb’s resonating texture.
The energetic snap of the drum performance injects energy and excitement, adding some nice contrast to bring the arrangement full circle. The guitars have a gorgeous shimmering affect, a testament to the artists process. He offers that the guitars are in alternate tunings and that he included a metal resonator guitar in the layers. It absolutely works.
Hear for yourself. Silver Days is featured on our Indie Underrated Playlist.
