RobinAugust reaches into her classic songbook and pulls out Boy Obsessed, a song she charmingly generated at only ten years old. Now a decade later she’s updated it with a punk inspired fury, one that truly embraces this frustrating concept. The disgusted disconnected punk attitude suits this narrative.
August teams with original collaborator Mercy Sophia and together the duet screams fun. It’s catchy in a cinematic realm, one that inspires visions of modern teen movie dramas in contrast to the 80s new wave nostalgia so often replicated. Boy Obsessed connects more with our new 90s nostalgic tendencies, an attribute we’re seeing more of and one we embrace whole heartedly. While its grungy nature cites the Breeders or Hole, Robin’s attitude recalls vintage Patti Smith. Case in point, don’t mess with her.
