Andrew Durkin wants out on The Cage. The topic of his new single, this trapped heartbroken protagonist knows what’s holding him back. “Denial is my drug, it keeps from thinking of all the claims I make on love, all the ways I flee your touch.” Slipping through a catchy groove to drop defeated sentiments, Durkin honors a vibe known to new indie heroes Wilco. He adds his own classic compositional flair in a manner that resonates with 90s flash hits rockers Wallflowers. It’s a testament to the songs classic rock appeal, cleverly stylistically citing the influence of Tom Petty or Counting Crows.
The Cage might have an autobiographical foundation, as the artist admits that “…the ashes of one creative project helped to fertilize the soil of another. And it grew into something that repeatedly saved my life over the next few years.” That project arrives in the form of the new album Critical Kid, where The Cage stands out as a breakthrough single.
