The Familiar has really delivered with their new single, Starry Eyes. The Nordic/NYC based duo, who have been featured in Virgin and HP ads as well as the Norwegian drama “Unge Lovende”, have continued to hone in their unique, brooding sound that has set them apart from other indie artists. Lead singer Ruth Mirsky’s vocals shine in this track, with a hushed alto that convey the meaning in the lyrics well. Her vocals could best be described as a mix of Kate Bush and Lana Del Rey.
The production is a groovy, 80s inspired track that takes elements of the dark wave and synth pop styles of that period. The track is built upon haunting, almost organ like synthesizer chords that play a minor chord progression. Punchy, Prince esque drum machines and round synth bass add a strong low end to the arrangement. The track fits in perfectly with the 80s revival currently hitting the indie scene.
