Isak’s Island’s new single, Someone I’d Recognize, has been on our rotation non stop. The lead single from his most recent album, Fallen Anchors on the Sea Bed, Isak’s Island is the project of Norwegian singer-songwriter Aksel Undset. The track is a folk rock ballad that draws influence from the 60s and 70s folk scene of Laurel Canyon. Undset’s vocals are forlorn with a huskiness to it that cuts through the mix well.
Behind Undset’s vocals is a backing track comprised mostly of bright, almost mandolin like acoustic guitars that swell into an arrangement with strings and hushed percussion. One can certainly hear the influence of artists such as Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, albeit with a more modern twist on that style in the production. The track is a perfect song to listen to on a late night drive to reminisce about life.
