Helena May really caught our attention with her new single, Somebody New. May has been independently releasing music since 2021, after a stint being signed to a major label. In theme with the new found independence after her time on a major label, this track can be best described as a “break free” track about taking back your own life and enjoying the journey life gives you. The music video for this track expounds upon these themes with a talk show segment, likely parodying James Cordon, and scenes in which May sits with her younger self.

Musically, this song is bouncy and upbeat, featuring bright, spanky guitars. The rhythm section features drum machines that recall 80s pop hits from artists like A-Ha and Hall and Oates. This song is a more modern take on the funk of bands like Jamiroquai (the CD for A Funk Odyssey is featured as an Easter egg in the music video) and Hiatus Kaiyote, with much brighter synths and deep sub bass taking prominence in the production. At the forefront, however, are May’s powerhouse vocals, which range from sweet and low to absolutely belting. This track is a cheery, fast number for those who want some motivation in their day.
